If you've just stumbled upon this trail report, be sure to check out my report on the Mississippi Palisades Campground!
After we set up camp, we decided to do the Sunset Trail. Most of the time when we hike, we let Weston walk on his own when he wants, but this time, we decided to keep him in the pack the whole time. This trail was pretty steep and although I am all about letting my little guy experience life, he sometimes doesn't pay attention to where he is going and I did not want him falling off the edge of a cliff. The park was nice enough to install a wooden staircase to get up the steep hill. Unfortunately, part of that staircase was crushed under the weight of a fallen branch at some point and has not been repaired. Thanks, Rauner. So we had to hike up around it. It wasn't too hard, just a little slick from the recent rains.
After we circumnavigated the broken staircase we continued on along the trail. It was so pretty! It was nice and shaded and very hilly, which we like (gotta get that cardio in somewhere!). We even saw a wild turkey! The trail had a lot of poison ivy along the edges, but we managed to avoid it. Even Knox loved the hike!
We made it to the lookout in about 40 minutes. There is a nice, well-kept (not broken) staircase that leads down to the edge of the palisade with a GORGEOUS view of the Mississippi River.
We hung out at the top for a bit and used our binoculars to see if we could see anything cool in the water. We didn't. Then we headed back down. On the way down, there are some really neat rock formations and little caves to explore.
