For Mother's Day I really, really wanted to go see the Bison at Fermi Lab. It's calving season and I I really wanted to see the baby bison, not to mention the ginormous mommy and daddy bison too! So before we headed out to our parents houses we swung by Fermi to see if we could catch a glimpse of them.
We found the Bison Viewing Area, but they were way in the corner, so we circled around, parked and walked along the fence to the corner they were in.
Fermi has one of the only herds of pure American bison in the country. And just this week, President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act, making bison the National Mammal! Bison once numbered in the millions but were practically driven to extinction during the settling of America. Apparently, when bison numbers began to decline, they were bred with cattle! Who knew that could happen?! For more fun facts about bison check out this link: 15 Facts About Our National Mammal.
So if you are looking for something to do this weekend, head out over to Fermi Lab and check out the bison!
